The dates for the puja are set based on the nakshatra. There are about 2-3 muhurat per month. Pitru Paksha is also a good time to perform this pooja.

It is beneficial to perform this ritual during Putrada Ekadashi. It takes place on the banks of a river or in another sacred place. This is a three-day ritual during the Ashlesha Nakshatra days. Devotees can also perform this pooja on the 7th day after the new moon day.
