Narayana Bali, Naag Bali Puja
Narayana Bali is sometimes called Moksha Narayana balo puja, as the main motive behind this ritual is to pacify the souls of the ancestors and fulfill their unrequited wishes through the family members. Moksha means liberation or freedom of the soul. A detailed description of the Moksha Narayana Bali Puja is found in the 40th chapter of the Garuda Purana. The Garuda Purana is one of the most sacred texts of the Sanatan Dharm, describing the cycle of life and death of each life. Purvakanda and Pretakanda are the two main parts of the Garuda Purana. The Narayana Bali Puja rituals refer to the Pretakanada content, that is, the rituals performed after death. It is said that the soul circles until the family performs these rituals, also known as pinda pradana.
Narayan Bali is one of the most important rituals performed after the death of a family member in certain cases when the death of a person is unnatural or accidental, when no rituals are offered to the ancestors or when the horoscope indicates Pitru Dosh. The entire process of rituals is described in the Garuda Puran and Dharma Sindhu with various scenarios. Often Narayana Bali is said to be performed when Rahu or Chandra is in Lagna sthan and affirmed by Saturn or Lagna/Saturn in Nakshatra like Pushya or Anuradha or Uttar Bhadrapada. This horoscope creates many hurdles like mental pressure, financial problems, stalled personal and professional life etc. In this situation, it is advisable to perform Abhichaar Shanti Yog along with Narayana Bali.
Narayana Bali Pooja consists of two different rituals.
The first is Narayana bali, which is performed to get rid of the ancestral curse, also called Pitru dosh or Pitru Shaap. For this purpose, an artificial body is used, usually made of wheat flour, also called pind. Mantras are used to invoke such souls that remain associated with certain desires. The rites ensure that they take possession of the body, and the funeral releases them into the other world.
The second ritual is Nag bali, which is performed to rid oneself of sins by killing a snake, especially a cobra, which is worshipped in India. Thus, Pitrudosh Narayan Bali is one of the most important rituals to get rid of Pitru dosha and Sarpa -snake hatya-.
Narayan Nagbali performed in Trimbakeshwar jyorilinga is considered very significant and is also a key ritual performed in Gokarna in Karnataka.
