Before you decide to pursue a career in law and to crack the entrance exam for CLAT, you should first and foremost determine your interest in it. You should not choose law school half-heartedly or for lack of other options, especially the five-year integrated law programme, because it will wear you out in the long run. Five years is a long time to do something that does not interest you.

As for studying law in India, I have compiled a few tips below that I can recommend off the top of my head.

Entrance exams - Prepare well and take entrance exams of good colleges in India. Do not go to any private colleges just for the sake of it. They often do not provide quality education. Maybe try CLAT or the NLUs. Central or state universities are also suitable if they have good faculty. A good law school will provide you with many opportunities and a solid foundation for your future.

Logical Thinking - Your logical and legal thinking must be very sharp. You must be able to read between the lines, look for loopholes, etc. Ignorance is very detrimental in law, no matter what career you choose afterwards.

Multiple Career Options - The last line of the previous note brings us to the fact that law school offers you multiple career alternatives. You could become a trial lawyer, a judge, a legal advisor, a teacher/professor, work in a law firm, a non-governmental organization, or even in Parliament. Once you have chosen a profession, you can also decide on an area of law in which you would like to practise - civil law, criminal law, corporate law, tax law, etc. You do not have to be conventional, study well, then intern at various institutions and make an informed decision.

Extensive and written laws - You need to know that the laws in India are all written down in vivid detail through legislation. They are very comprehensive. They are also considered by the courts as the primary source of law. In many countries, such as America, judicial precedents take precedence, but in India you need to know the written laws and the Constitution. That is the basic standard.

You have to know MS Word. I think this is very important because if you are good with Word (or similar applications on other computers), it will help you a lot in writing drafts, discussion papers, research papers, projects, writing your CV or resume, and much more. If you do not give importance to this skill, your work will become very tedious, my friend.

Know + Talk - Finally, I'd like to leave you with some wisdom that a mentor I interned with shared with me. If you are interested in becoming a lawyer, your knowledge and speaking skills will help you master it. Yes, I agree, "knowledge" includes almost everything. But no one has ever told me it's that simple. Just know; and be able to express what you know. So these are the two qualities you need to work on. Extracurricular activities will take you a long way in this regard. Participate in moot courts, debates, MUNs, and write research papers.

Law Certificate Courses

Law certificate courses are available in many specializations such as competition law, consumer law, legal studies, intellectual property, and human rights.

The duration of a certificate course in law is maximum 1 to 6 months.

Out of the top 10 law colleges in India as per NIRF ranking, only 3 law colleges namely NLU New Delhi, NUJS Kolkata and SLS Pune offer law certificate courses.

To be eligible for the certificate courses, students must have completed class 10 and 12 from a recognized school.

For a few courses, students must also graduate from a recognized college.

The fees for a law certificate course total INR 1,000 - INR 15,000; they are comparatively cheaper than law diploma courses or LLB /LLMs.
