The word Rudra is mentioned in the Vedas and is believed to focus on the fearsome, aggressive and destructive side of Lord Shiva's nature. The Rudra Tandav dance is an example of the merciless side of Lord Shiva's nature. There are many stories about why Shiva is called Rudra. On Mahashivratri, Rudra Abhishek is one of the most important rituals to be performed. Devotees must perform Rudra Abhishek in a correct manner and with pure devotion to Lord Shiva.
What is Rudrabhishek puja?
Rudrabhishek puja is a sublime ritual. It is considered one of the purest rituals in Hinduism. In Rudrabhishek puja, Lord Shiva is given a holy bath along with flowers and the sacred puja materials.
How to perform Rudrabhishek
Place a plate in the area of the ritual and place the Shiva Ling on it.
Light a lamp (diya) with oil or ghee and place it to the right of the Shiva Ling.
Decorate all the puja ingredients (samagri) in a tray as described above and sit comfortably facing east. Avoid sitting directly on the floor with an asana.
Both men and women must wear clean ethnic clothing when performing Rudrabhishek.
Perform Achamanya, a purification ritual in Hinduism, while chanting aloud religious chants such as Om Narayanaya Namah, etc.
Ask for the blessings of Lord Ganesha, Lord Indra and your Kul Devta before starting the puja.
Offer Bel Patra while reciting OM Namah Shivaya and offer flowers and Akshat to the lamp.
Now gently move the Shiva Ling out of the ritual space to an open space or tray and place the Linga on a Bel Patra to easily perform the Rudrabhishek.
Begin the Rudrabhishek by offering some water while reciting 'Om Namah Shivaya'.
Then gently pour panchamrit on the Shiva Ling.
Offer chandan and water.
Offer flowers and raw milk, followed by Gangajal or water.
Now clean and purify the Shiva Ling and place it back on its original throne on a Bel Patra.
Offer Vastra, Janeu and apply Chandan with your right finger.
Light the Dhoop followed by a lamp or Diya and distribute Bhasma, Bel Patra, Durva and flowers while ringing the bell.
Then cleanse your hand and offer fruits, paan, supari, laung and elaichi, dakshina, etc.
Keep chanting OM Namah Shivaya during the Rudrabhishek.
You can also recite the Maha Mrityunjay mantra.
Perform the pooja with camphor (kapoor), then do parikrama and end the puja by asking Lord Shiva for his blessings with flowers and naman.

Ghee Abhishek is considered a blessing for a life free from illness and physical problems.
Dahi Abhishek
Dahi Abhishek is said to give a child to a childless couple as a blessing.
